If you’ve been thinking of adding to your family, now would be the perfect time.

Take home a pet from the Humane Society of Broward County between August and October, and you could help the non-profit rescue organization secure a $100,000 award.

Thanks to thousands of votes from the community, the Humane Society of Broward County recently won a spot in the ASPCA $100,000 Challenge, a nationwide contest in which 50 shelters compete for a chance to win much-needed funds. Only five other shelters in Florida won a spot in the contest.

The winner of the jackpot will be the shelter that has the greatest increase in their pet adoptions and owner reunifications between August and October, using last year’s numbers for the same time frame as a benchmark.

“For reference we sent home approximately 2,400 animals in 2010 during that time frame [last year],” says Cherie Wachter, the Humane Society’s spokesperson. The shelter’s goal for the challenge is 4,500, or 1,500 animals per month.

“If you’ve thought about adopting a pet, now is the perfect time to visit the Humane Society of Broward County,” Wachter says. ”Your adoption could potentially help thousands of other pets.”

The shelter is planning various adoption specials during the challenge, including a “Diamond in the Ruff” promotion in which a dog that is being overlooked will have its $100 adoption fee waived. In addition, cats over the age of six months will have their $85 adoption fee waived throughout the challenge. Other special promotions, challenge updates and available pets can be found at www.humanebroward.com/challenge.

The Humane Society of Broward County is a private, non-profit organization supported by donations. It is open seven days a week at 2070 Griffin Rd., Fort Lauderdale. The shelter also does mobile adoptions at the following PETCO locations: 9960 Glades Rd., Boca Raton; 1470 Hallandale Beach Blvd.; and 6200 S. Dixie Hwy., South Miami.
